In October 2021, a group of 15 Slovakian students with their teachers was hosted by euromind in Sevilla to carry out a two weeks-long internship placement in a fashion design field. They had a great opportunity to get to know the process of sewing traditional flamenco dresses.

All the students were placed in a company from fashion industry one of the biggest and most modern fashion school in Andalusia. During this two-week internship, the students learned and practiced the preparation of a flamenco dresses collection, drawing different types of flounces, fixing the designed decorative elements of dress, working with the model of corps and developing the appropriate tailor pattern, preparing three illustrations made with a pencil to be able to make the necessary adjustments by the teacher. They were working in groups. Before getting into our flamenco dresses, they had a lesson about the history of flamenco dresses. Not only dresses, but the whole following traditions from Spanish cultures. One of the first tasks they had was to sketch out their dresses ideas. There was one thing that united their sketches – the colours! They were inspired by the view from a plane of the Spanish countryside. Really warm and ground type colours. Depending on their development and performance review, the students were gradually assigned new and more demanding tasks.

Apart from the time devoted to work, the group was given an intensive Spanish course to aid them in developing their Spanish language skills and helped them to communicate in daily situations. So, is that all? Of course, not! During the weekends they traveled in south Spain: they visited Matalascañas Beach and Granada, the city of three religions and cultures: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. They also took part in a Flamenco Show in the auditorium which was created by a local family with deep ties to the local flamenco art scene. It was a cultural space, located in the heart of Seville, between two emblematic sites, the Seville Cathedral and City Hall.

The internship has not only been a time to develop knowledge of the sector but also to learn Spanish, get to know a completely different culture, make new friends and develop interpersonal skills. We hope that all of this will be an unforgettable memory for our interns and that in the future they will be able to take advantage of everything they have learned during their stay.

The first thing I saw was the huge modern building of the school. The concrete blocks looked really cold and sharp. Unlike our new teachers. They speak only Spanish but somehow we always understand what they are telling us. Our work here was to make a flamenco dress. All with the help of our amazingly kind teachers, we managed to finish the dress. The whole experience, working in a new environment, working under pressure, we really did our best. I am happy that I was here.

I came here like a photographer, and I was really nervous. My job was to capture every single moment of the process of making a Flamenco dress. I enjoyed the whole process of standing behind the camera, and it was really nice. At the same time, I was really scared. What if the quality of photos will be bad? What if the people won´t like them? I was really surprised when everyone was satisfied with my work, and I was thankful. I also enjoyed all the trips and Spanish classes with Paqui. It was really nice experience for me, and I am really grateful for the opportunity. I am also thankful to every teacher, that helped with making the Flamenco dress and that helped us make our stay here bearable.
